NZ Identity: Parliament

As part of our New Zealand Identity unit we have been learning all about New Zealand Parliament.

Here is a link to the online modelling book for this unit if learning.

We have learned all about the different roles that people have in parliament.

Some things that I have found interesting are:
  • That there are three readings before a law can be made.
  • That the opposition trys to disagrees with the goverment to make it seem like it is a bad idea.
  • That there are 120 seats in parliament.

Standard Form, Rounding and Decimal Place Value.

In this maths group I found the second IXL activitie hard because hyou had to make sure you had the right amount of zeros infront or behind the number.
I found how you can make the bigger numbers smaller by writing it differently.

Identify the number of tenths, hundredths and thousandths in numbers up to three decimal places.

Here are some screen shots of my IXL activeites I did.

Elections writing

WALT: Write an effective argument for our chosen political party.

Have you voted yet? The National party is the party to vote for in this election. I believe that New Zealand doesn’t need to change, their isn’t any reason that we should change the country when it is going great. For instance; the amount of crimes that are happening is increasing, people are dying because they can’t afford to go to the doctor, people need a better health system. National have so many great policies that they have promised. Personally, I know that increasing police staff will help New Zealand become even safer.

The first policy I’m going to talk about is increasing police staff by 1,125 over four years. National believes that New Zealand is one of the safest countries in the world but it could be even safer. Increasing the number of police should deliver a more responsive Police service. I believe, it will help the community with not having to be concerned about getting robbed. Furthermore, it will  prevent crime and victimisation, resolve more crimes, and more effectively target criminal gangs and organised crime. Lots of people commit the crime because the have a low income and can’t afford to go to the doctor.

The second policy I’m going to talk about is to cap doctor visits at $18 for people with low incomes. Expanding $18 doctor visits means more  New Zealanders on low incomes can access healthcare when they need it. For instance, less people will get diseases and if they do then they can get cured without taking it from things that are more important like their food money. I think, there will be less people who are sick/ill because they can’t go to the doctors. Having to pay less money to go to the doctors helps, but we also need more funding in health so that more people can get cured from diseases and other health issues.

My third policy I’m going to talk about is increasing health funding by 3.9 billion over four years. National believes New Zealand’s health system is facing cost pressures. Increasing health funding should ensure all New Zealanders have access to high quality health services. This is a great way to use the money as it helps lots of people in the country. As more people come to New Zealand it is important that we have a good health system. These are policies that I agree with the next one I totally disagree with

Labour has a poor policy of reducing teacher to child ratio group sizes. Firstly, It will cost more money to get more teachers. Teachers can handle classes that have about 25 students in them and that is the average. Thirdly, I believe that if there are classes with more students there are normally two or more teachers. However, just because Labour's policies aren’t great. It doesn’t mean we can’t continue with Nationals.

Clearly, I have explained why National is the best party to vote for. Nationals policies are very strong in health. I have talked about increasing police staff, making it cheaper to go to the doctor if you have a low income and increasing health funding. All of these would help New Zealand a lot.
So you know who I’m voting for who are you?

My next steps are:  Is to use emotive language more in my argument.

Koru Games Reflection

In the Koru Games the sport I competed in was Netball

Our team came 12th

I found the experience to be interesting because we did really well and could have beaten teams we lost to.

In terms of working with Individuals and Groups; my solo level is extended abstract because I can give people feed back on how they could work better and I can get feed back on what I need to do.

For Teamwork; my solo level is extended abstract because I can take responsibility on being captain and I can participate with a good attitude.

Individuals and groups
I need help to work in a group (with teachers or other students
I can work in a group with my friends.
I can work in a group with anyone in my  year level or team

I can respond positively to the needs of others
I can reflect on how well I work with the group and seek feedback on how I can improve
Teamwork

I need help to interact with others.

I need help to participate in a team.
I can interact with others one to one.

I can participate in a team.
I can interact with others in a small group.

I can participate and take responsibility in a team.

I can participate and take responsibility in a team and explain my choices in terms of team outcomes.
I can participate in creating healthy teams by taking responsibility and critical action.

Letter Writing

In Writing we have been learning to: Write a formal letter.

We have followed the writing process and have planned and drafted a formal letter.

This shows the process that we have followed.

Here is the letter that I have written Draft

Here is my reflection on the letter writing that we have done.

One thing that I found challenging about writing formal letters was thinking of what to write and how it can be made formal.

My next step is: look for more opportunities to put my letter writing knowledge into practice in the future.

Te hapua Distinction #6

On Friday Mr Muller's class drove down to Te Hapua because it was raining.
When we got there we went and sat down on the seating area in the library and waited for the teachers to come and let us in.
Our class is split into two groups and one group did robotics and coding.
I had been doing robotics for the past fie weeks and now I am in coding. We watched a video to start off the seson and learn why it is a good thing to learn coding.
Firstly we learnt how to use different codes we were using scratch to do our coding then we did a get to know me quiz using lots of different codes that we learnt.

I showed respect by listening to the teacher while she was talking.

I was also being trustworthy by not going on sites I wasn't meant to be on.

Operations using fractions, percentages, decimals and integers.

In Maths we have been learning to: Understand operations using fractions, percentages, decimals and integers.

Here is some evidence of my learning.

Here are screenshots for all 6 IXL activities that I have completed.

Extended Abstract assessment task answer sheet and the activity sheet.

Something that challenged me during this unit of learning was Solve percentage problems where the percentage is unknown because it took me longer to figure out how to do it and complete it./

My next step is to continue to apply these strategies to real life/ problem solving situations.

Reading - Evaluate Texts

In reading we have been learning to….make decisions about the usefulness of the text for purpose, by using a variety of criteria to evaluate.

Here is a link to our online modelling book

We have been evaluating texts against the following four criteria:
  1. Readability
  2. Accuracy
  3. Relevance
  4. Status

These documents show evidence of my learning during this unit:
(link your own learning for each of these activities. Please make sure your sharing settings are open)

My Next Step: Is to continue to apply this new knowledge and evaluate texts as I read them, checking for readability, accuracy, relevance and quality of language/ information

On Thursday the year 7/8's travel on a bus to get to lincoln primary school to have technology.
I am in science now at the start someone got to chose an element of the day and Amber chose galiuim.
After that we learnt about magnets and how the north and the south can connect but the north and the north and the south and the south can't connect.
Next we started prepare our tables because we disected mussels.
Then once we had finished we played element bingo which is just bingo but with the elements of the preodic table.

Term 2 Book Review

This book tells the story of one hundred sportsmen and women of our time and shows the dedication and commitment needed to be a world record breaker. The book is split into different sports.
The sports in the book are american football, baseball, basketball, cycling, cricket, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, ice skating, rugby league, rugby union, skiing, soccer, sumo wrestling, swimming, tennis, triathlon and track and field. I think this is a good book to read if you want to learn about great sports people.
If you want to find out more about this book you can read it.

Term 2 Novel Study

This term I have been reading and studying the novel castaway

I found this novel interesting because I liked learning about the shipwreck and how they survived for so long and I also liked that is was a true story.

During the novel I had to complete a thinking map which shows that I can classify how the author has shown the theme of the book.

National Standard this covers

  • Year 9/10 Standard
    • I can locate, evaluate, analyse and summarise information and ideas within texts and across a range of texts.
    • I have a large vocabulary that is connected to my own knowledge about the world and includes: - academic e.g observe vs watch - subject-specific (specific words about a subject (e.g feline) - technical terms (specialised vocabulary of a particular field.)
Overall I would give this novel a rating of  8/10 and I would / would not recommend it to others to read because it was a cool idea on how they turned a diary into a story because I have never seen a book like that before and it was also a good historical book.

Construct and describe simple loci.

I can apply the strategy to problem solving questions involving circles

400m track you take the two semi circles at the ends which is 36.5 then you double it to make the diameter. Then you times it by π which is 229.34m then you divide it by 2 which is 114.67m and that is what the ends are. For the sides you minus 400 with 229.34 which equals 170.66 then you half it which equals 85.33 and that is the length of the sides.

Current Events Term 2, 2017

WALT: I can successfully research a current event.
Here is a link to our online modelling book for this unit of learning.

The National Standard that I have been aiming for during this unit of learning is:

  • Year 9/10: I can read in different ways to find and/or understand information that that is not immediately easy to access or is not organised in familiar ways.

Each week we have read a short text about a current event/ topic. We then formed questions based on what we had read.  After this we researched the answers to our questions and finally we gave our opinions on what we had found out.

Here is some evidence of my learning.

My Next Step is to continue to  apply the reading and  research skills that I have learned in a variety of other areas.

Friday 30 June 2017

Technology Distinction #3

On Thursday the year 7/8's travel on a bus to get to lincoln primary school to have technology.
I am in science now at the start someone got to chose an element of the day and Sophie chose radium.
After that we tested 6 different brands of paper towels and we put it into some water and then we squeezed the water out and measured how much water it absorbed.
Next we drew a grah on the amount of water that they absorbed and tuffy absorbed the most amount of water.
Then once we haad finished we could carry on with our word find that he gave us at the start of the pentad.

I showed active thinking by making it fair and not makong the one I thought would absorb the most water win.

I was also showing integrity by being fair when testing by leaving them in for the same amount of time.

Careers Education C.V. Writing

In CAREERS EDUCATION we have been learning to write a skills based Curriculum Vitae.

A skills based C.V. focuses more on the skills that we have,  rather than our work history.

Here is a link to our online Modelling Book that shows the process we have followed.

Three things that I have learned about writing a Curriculum Vitae are:

  1. It can't have any spelling,  grammar and punctuation mistakes

  1. What skills are required to have a job

  1. It was easier than I thought

Here is a link to my Skills based Curriculum Vitae.
